Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Camp Douglas, WI.

There are programs available in or near Camp Douglas which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will ideally no longer engage in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment objective is to handle the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do offer a limited amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
