There are programs offered in or near Dorchester which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do provide a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary treatment, and it is encouraged.
