There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Hixton which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will ideally not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do offer a small amount of counseling and therapy as secondary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
