Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Horicon, WI.

There are substance abuse programs available in or near Horicon which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are used in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will ideally no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do deliver a small amount of counseling and therapy as secondary services, and it is encouraged.
