Alcohol and drug abuse programs for Military Veterans are central for the mental well-being and overall stability of Vets of all branches of the armed forces. Because substance abuse and other mental health disorders are found at higher than average rates among Veterans, it is crucial that Veterans get the assistance they need because of such high rates of suicide also associated with these disorders among our Vets.
Alcohol and drug abuse programs for Veterans in Independence are available from the VA, with services that include efforts to handle associated disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, pain, disturbed sleep, irritability, and/or relationship problems which most commonly trigger substance abuse disorders among Vets. Treatment for addiction and related problems among Military Vets includes individual and group therapy and psychotherapies that can increase a person's motivation to change. Involvement in outside support such as AA and other support groups is encouraged. Medications are also used in some circumstances to help Military Veterans lessen their drug, alcohol and tobacco use.
Drug and alcohol abuse facilities for Vets are offered during the evening and weekend hours, with both residential and outpatient options available. Programs which are Women-Only or Men-Only and those for homeless Veterans are available in certain areas.
