There are addiction programs offered in or near La Crosse which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid addicted client will instead not engage in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to handle the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do offer a limited amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
