There are substance abuse programs available in or near Maiden Rock which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are used in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors that cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid dependent client will instead not become involved in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to handle the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
