There are addiction programs offered in or near Niagara that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid addicted client will ideally no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do provide a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
