One of the out-patient rehab alternatives for people in Ontario who are struggling with opioid abuse and addiction is opioid maintenance therapy. Licensed clinics and doctors are certified to administer certain medications to opioid dependent individuals, many of which are opioid-based also and are addictive. In low enough amounts however, the individual does not experience high feelings and also does not have acute cravings and is not in opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first drug administered for this reason, but there are a few more choices to choose from.
Methadone is an opioid and is meant to be taken at an outpatient clinic certified to administer the med, that is taken daily as a pill or liquid. The cost of the drug is around $150 per month. Buprenorphine is also an opioid-based med, and is in pill form often taken every other day. But unlike Methadone that can only be given in highly well-regulated clinics, Buprenorphine can be and is prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The monthly cost of buprenorphine is around $300 monthly for the generic version of the drug. There is also a type of buprenorphine that contains naloxone, that is a med which reverses the effects of opiates. Someone consuming this formulation, AKA Suboxone, would find it more difficult to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It is also taken every day, and is priced approximately $450 per month. Naltrexone is another medication taken in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other medications mentioned here it is an opiate blocker and isn't an opiate. A person has the choice to take this drug as a monthly shot, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, the drug prevents a person from experience high feelings from opioids, and therefore lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily injection costs in the range of $1000 to $1200 per month.
