Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Plain, WI.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Plain which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
