There are addiction programs offered in or near Rosendale that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will instead not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
