There are programs available in or near Scandinavia that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are used in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will ideally no longer engage in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to handle the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do deliver a limited amount of counseling and therapy as secondary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
