Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Three Lakes, WI.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Three Lakes that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
