Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Tomah, WI.

There are programs available in or near Tomah which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid addicted client will ideally no longer engage in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do offer a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
