Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Two Rivers, WI.

There are recovery programs offered in or near Two Rivers that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will instead no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary services, and it is recommended and encouraged.
