Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Wascott, WI.

There are programs offered in or near Wascott which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid addicted client will ideally no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do deliver a limited amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary treatment, and it is encouraged.
