There are substance abuse programs offered in or near West Bend that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid addicted client will instead no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel high. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do provide a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary services, and it is encouraged.
