There are programs offered in or near Alkol which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will ideally not become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment objective is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do provide a small amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary services, and it is encouraged.
