There are programs offered in or near Eskdale which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid addicted client will ideally no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to manage the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do offer a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary services, and it is encouraged.
