Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Fenwick, WV.

There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Fenwick that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will ideally not become involved in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel high. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do deliver a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary services, and this is encouraged.
