Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Freeman, WV.

There are programs available in or near Freeman that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid addicted client will ideally no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do offer a limited amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary treatment, and this is encouraged.
