There are recovery programs available in or near Friendly which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid addicted client will instead no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do deliver a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary services, and it is encouraged.
