Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Hanover, WV.

There are substance abuse programs available in or near Hanover that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will ideally no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary treatment, and this is encouraged.
