There are programs offered in or near Hernshaw that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid addicted client will ideally not become involved in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do deliver a small amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary treatment, and this is encouraged.
