Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Hewett, WV.

There are programs offered in or near Hewett that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will ideally not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to manage the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do offer a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary treatment, and it is encouraged.
