Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Ivydale, WV.

There are programs offered in or near Ivydale that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors that cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will ideally not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel high. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment goal is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
