There are programs available in or near New Haven which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will ideally no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't at the same time making them feel high. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
