Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Smithers, WV.

There are substance abuse programs available in or near Smithers that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid dependent client will instead no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment goal is to manage the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do deliver a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary services, and it is recommended and encouraged.
