There are addiction programs offered in or near Van which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid dependent client will instead not engage in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment goal is to handle the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do offer a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary services, and it is encouraged.
