There are substance abuse programs available in or near Wharncliffe that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid addicted client will instead not become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment goal is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do deliver a small amount of counseling and therapy as secondary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
