Clients referred from the court for drug treatment are typically referred because they are being granted a chance to try their hand at rehabilitation instead of jail time, other charges, fines, etc. While this is more prevalent with first time offenders, it can be offered at any time including while the defendant is being held in jail. There are different types of rehab programs that criminal justice clients can be referred to, and it usually all depends on what is attainable in Veteran and the type of issues they'll need treatment for.
There are rehab facilities that work directly with the criminal justice court system to treat this explicit type of clientele, and are typically state funded or are available at no cost or very little cost to the client. There are also private drug and alcohol treatment programs that might be approved by the court if there is a specific type of recovery method that the client needs or prefers that a state-funded facility can't provide. The client's legal representation can request such options to the judge for permission. There are even addiction rehab facilities that operate out of the correctional institutions themselves, in which case clients are sometimes in a better position for reduced sentences or other leniencies when enrolling in substance abuse rehab services while serving their sentence for a drug related offense or a DUI/DWI.
