Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.
There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.
These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in West Monroe which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
